Anita Steckel: The Feminist Art of Sexual Politics, edited by Richard Meyer and Rachel Middleman, accompanies the 2022 exhibition of the same name at the Stanford Art Gallery.
Published by Stanford, the catalogue includes essays by Kelly Filreis, Alison Gingeras, Richard Meyer, and Rachel Middleman, and is supported by a grant from the Jay DeFeo Foundation.
The most comprehensive exhibition to date on the groundbreaking work of American feminist artist Anita Steckel (1930–2012), The Feminist Art of Sexual Politics takes its title from Steckel’s 1972 show at Rockland Community College, which was condemned by local politicians for its sexual content. In response, Steckel founded the Fight Censorship Group in 1973 alongside Louise Bourgeois, Martha Edelheit, Joan Semmel, Hannah Wilke, and other feminist artists committed to defending artistic freedom.
Organized on the 50th anniversary by editors and curators Richard Meyer and Rachel Middleman, the exhibition reunites key works from the pivotal 1972 show and traces Steckel’s lifelong commitment to feminist visibility and resistance to censorship.
